How WARDOGS artillery works
Ranges and elevations below come from the bundled artillery reference used by getwardogshq.com.
Indirect fire in one paragraph
An artillery piece does not aim at a target, it aims at an angle. You measure the distance and bearing from the gun to the target, look up the elevation that throws a shell that far, dial it in, and wait out the flight time. Everything else is correcting from where the first round lands.
The guns and their envelopes
| Weapon | Minimum range | Maximum range | Elevation band |
|---|---|---|---|
| L81 Mortar | 132 m | 684 m | 150–850 mil |
| SPH-2 | 780 m | 2629 m | 20–1390 mil |
The L81 Mortar has a hard minimum of 132 m. Closer than that and there is no elevation that will reach, which is the single most common reason a new mortar crew cannot hit anything.
Higher elevation is not more range
Elevation is measured in mils, and the relationship is inverted from what most players expect: a higher elevation number in this table means a steeper shot and a shorter distance. The L81 Mortar table runs from 850 mil at the near edge of its envelope down to 150 mil at maximum range. Steeper shots also hang in the air longer, so a close target can take longer to hit than a far one.
Get the solution without doing the maths
The interactive map does this for you. Click once to place your gun, once to place the target, and it returns distance, bearing, the elevation to dial and the flight time, on Bakurani or Ozeti. Bakurani uses a 16,320 m community calibration that has not been verified in game, so treat the last few metres as an estimate and correct from your first impact.
Frequently asked
What is the minimum range of the L81 mortar in WARDOGS?
The L81 mortar cannot fire closer than about 132 m. Its maximum range is about 684 m.
Does a higher elevation mean more range in WARDOGS?
No. Elevation is in mils and the relationship is inverted: higher mil values are steeper, shorter shots with a longer flight time.
Is there a WARDOGS artillery calculator?
Yes. The interactive map on WARDOGS HQ returns distance, bearing, elevation and flight time when you place a gun and a target on Bakurani or Ozeti.
